There are lots of different "We're going to release (one/two/ten) free (tracks/covers/Remixes/EPs) every (day/week/month) for the rest of this (week/month/year)" announcements. Some of them - like Bishop Allen's EP Project - are really cool. Others, however, fall very very flat. It's like saying "Instead of spending time on quality music, we're going to put out loads of half-finished stuff. But it's free so you can't complain!"
So needless to say I was dubious when I heard about The Five One, a quartet of dudes from DMV who are putting out a cover every week this year over at Deuce Day World. BUT! As you may have ascertained from the fact that I am writing about them, they are actually really freakin' good.
The guys have a great combination of covering/sampling/remixing wherein they take an original track, play the original melodies and rhythms, add their own embellishments, and change most of the lyrics. It's a cool blend of a lot of appropriation styles, and it makes for a very entertaining listen. On "A Hard Dopalicious Night", for example, they take an original Outkast tune, change it up a bit, and sing some of their own lyrics along with Kid Cudi's "Day N' Nite" over the top. Baller. Over the course of around 25 weeks, they've covered everything from Death Cab and Vampire Weekend to N.E.R.D. and Jay-Z.
I've been listening to their covers for a few days, and I'm really diggin' them. I especially can't get enough of this Sam Sparro do-over. So dope it's disgusting.
