Singin' In The Cave

In my continuing scramble to catch up with great albums from this year, I've recently come across The Cave Singers, a band out of Seattle. Apparently one of the Cave Singers is from Pretty Girls Make Graves, which is pretty cool.

Anywho, I started spinning their latest album, Welcome Joy, and was struck by how much they do with very little. The opening track, "Summer Windows," is an exercise in simplicity - a little picked guitar line, echoing voices, and very subtle drums make up the song, which is beautifully done. I don't listen to a ton of music like this, so I appreciate it when bands/songs like these can catch my ear so quickly.

The rest of Welcome Joy is similarly pleasing. A current runs through the entire disc, making it feel much like a whole rather than a collection of disparate songs. It's the kind of album that you put on while you're doing something, and then realize that all of a sudden the album is over and it's thirty-five minutes later in the blink of an eye.

The album won't be one of my favorites of the year. Too much fascinating music was made this year, too many albums that are difficult to supersede. There is a beautiful simplicity here, though, and I have the feeling that I'll revisit Welcome Joy on a lot of quiet Sunday afternoons in the future.
