Smoooooove Remixes

It’s a remix weekend here on TSRE, and we’ll start off with some smooth jams. As you may have heard, Phoenix will be releasing an album of remixes of tunes from their latest LP, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The names attached to the tracklist are mindblowingly good – Passion Pit, Alex Metric, Devendra Banhart, Animal Collective, YACHT, Friendly Fires, etcetcetc. Based on the two tracks I’ve heard so far, there is absolutely no way you should overlook this album.

The first remix I caught was the retake of “Rome” by Neighbours, featuring Devendra Banhart. It’s a blissed out version that recalls Sigur Ros’ beautiful, icy, alien soundscapes. It’s one of those remixes that sounds completely natural – as if the song were originally written and performed that way. Can you ask for anything more?

The second remix, which surfaced sometime on Thursday, comes from Animal Collective, indie darlings of 2009. Their remix, which namedrops bandmember Deakin (who was absent from AnCo’s latest Merriweather Post Pavilon), is also a stretched out version of the Phoenix tune. It definitely embodies the ever evolving Animal Collective style, sounding completely at home next to What Do I Want Sky, the first post-MPP track produced by the group. It builds on itself, fractured yet completely cohesive, and it rocks in a way that only the softly complex touch of Animal Collective can. Well done, boys.

Finally, a third track that has been all over the interwebs – a remix of Florence + the Machine by up-and-comers The XX. I haven’t heard a ton from the XX, since they are relatively new to the scene, but everything I have gotten my ears on has been pretty brilliant. Still need to check out that LP. If this remix is any indication, they’ll be around for a while.
