Missing the Boat: St. Vincent

In what is starting to be an unfortunately more frequent occurrence here on TSRE, I have grossly overlooked a recent great album. This installment concerns St. Vincent's current album Actor. Before finding Actor about a week ago, I have to admit that I had never listened to St. Vincent before for whatever reason. Now I am hooked. As evidenced on her wonderfully breezy song Laughing with a Mouth of Blood, St. Vincent possesses a dreamy voice and she knows how to construct melody. At first its business as usual with delicate strings and guitar, but then *boom* frantic synths and horns come crashing out of nowhere on tracks like Marrow and Actor out of Work. These quick shifts from languid to hectic really make Actor special, not to mention that the rhythms are incredibly sick to top it off.
