Foolish Tunes

"April 1," wrote Mark Twain.  "This is the day upon which we are reminded of what we are on the other three hundred and sixty-four."

What a great quote.  We here at The Stu Reid Experiment want to wish you a happy April Fool's Day - not in the form of a lame joke or brilliant prank, but in the form we know best, music!

Some of my favorite Fool-ish tracks for your April First enjoyment - the first is a lilting, trumpet laden sway through the eyes of a foolish bandmember.  Neutral Milk Hotel is stunning even in instrumental one-offs, and "The Fool" is a stellar track from one of the all-time great albums.

The second track comes from the Acoustic Sublime album, "Sublime Acoustic: Bradley Nowell and Friends".  This album is fantastic - obviously a stretch to get more material out of the Sublime catalogue, but also home to some sweet versions of good songs.  Sounds like someone had a tape recorder while Bradley Nowell messed around on his acoustic guitar, stopping to figure out the right picking or chords.  His voice sounds amazing as usual, and the laid back off-the-cuff musical style really fits this tune.

And finally, a little Ray Charles to wash everything down.  One of the all-time greats, for sure, Ray entertains with "A Fool For You" from the aptly titled Pure Genius collection.  What a talented dude - a shame he ended up recording Powerball jingles in New Jersey (true story).  His voice is the most incredibly combination of raw and polished, a baffling mixture that makes his tunes completely rapturous.  I'd fall for his April Fool Pranks on purpose.

Have a great first of April!  Avoid that computer virus!

P.S.  Serious bonus points to whoever can help me out with this one.  Beenie Man has a track called "The Fool" that uses the Middle Eastern Riddim that is a reggae staple.  There's another pretty famous song that uses the same riddim, but I can't seem to put my finger on it.  I want to say it's Missy Elliot?  But I can't think of what song it is - this is killin' me...if you have any help, leave it in the comments.  A thousand points if you can ID it...
