Children of the Corn

So this post has nothing to do with the campy Halloween favorite, Children of the Corn that features some ingenious uses of crop irrigation to defeat the antichrist. But this first song if by Flying Lotus, about whom I talked about a few months ago. I'm not going to restate myself here, but here is Mr. Lotus' version of Promiscuous Girl by Nelly Furtado off of his new Shhhh EP. Ballin, but in a weird way. It still conjures up memories of Stupot and Ben Davis in the fur coat....

Flying Lotus - Promiscuous

Next up are these traxx from OCDJ who in the vein of the tremendous Ratatat remixes fuses rap vocals with in his case tiny bopping 8 bit tunes. Its actually pretty cool, like someone playing a little electronic organ behind some rhymes. Well, check it out and his last album is called Hooray from 2007. A nice break from all the heavy remixes out there. Imagine a less insane Dan Deacon messing around.

OCDJ - Woopash
OCDJ - Guess What!

PS. the Celtics signed the star of 2004's smash hit The Perfect Score Darius Miles last week. Now we just need Qrich to throw up those antenna.

Hmm...

I wish I hadn't done as much research for this post as I ended up doing. Because until about an hour ago I was developing into a big 3oh!3 fan. One of the guys is an ultimate player - a good one too. Like Zack Dorner good. Like friends with Smelly Nate Raines good. Forrest Hanson '06, a hipster if I've ever met one, likes them. All signs point to yes.

And so I check out Don't Trust Me.

3oh!3 - Don't Trust Me

It's pretty damn good. Nice production, very electronic, as befits TSRE. Describing some hipster chick (black dress with the tights underneath), and then talking to her these Boulder dudes drop a pretty sick (if white as hell) line: "Tell your boyfriend, if he says he's got beef, that I'm a vegetarian and I ain't fucking scared of him."

Nice.

Still, a lot of this song is about "Don't trust a ho, never trust a ho." And there is some anger here towards women, some serious disdain. I don't really get it, I don't really like it, it's not clever or insightful, just kind of sneering.

The rest of their stuff is a big fat meh. A lot of preening, a lot of ridiculous rap lines that aren't delivered with enough finesse - they just come off like jackasses a bunch, talking about how hype it is when they come up in the club, how if you fuck with they city, you fuckin with they kin, how hot girls look in daisy dukes. They even have a not quite ironic enough gang sign to throw up, displayed on the album cover and in the videos they shoot in local elementary schools.

I think it really comes down to their main guy's delivery. His voice sounds just the way mine does when I'm drunk, Freeway come on, and I forget that I can't rap. Where is the playfulness in any of this? Plus, listen to this next track and tell me that there aren't some desperate parallels to Panic At the Disco at 1:30-1:50.

3oh!3 - I'm Not Your Boyfriend Baby

It's not all bad. I like some of it. I may even come around to them. But I dunno, there's something running under this music that doesn't do it for me. I think that even the parts that I like, as in this final example, I wouldn't like as much live with them there. This music doesn't make me comfortable, and what is better about the music moment we're going through than how comfortably weird it is? You can flail around to Girltalk, Passion Pit (check them out if you haven't yet, see below), Ratatat, Black Kids, etc. and nobody minds. I feel like these dudes are pointing and laughing.

3oh!3 - I Can't Do It Alone

Maybe not. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood. Maybe it is fucking weird that I expect my white artists to only approach rap-style lyrics with a carefully maintained distance but still love songs like Lollipop with few reservations. Who the fuck am I to criticize? I'll be loving these guys in a few days.

Look at this sweet picture of me. Lamar out.

I'm Dumb

For not starting to listen to Crosby, Stills and Nash sooner. This summer I've started a listening to a lot more classic rock to expand my horizons beyond what I now realize was a fairly narrow scope. In addition, I would also recommend some King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Below are a few tracks. There really is so much out there. Weirdly enough, I have vivid memories of hearing the song Cathedral at some point during my young childhood. Its one of my only real memories from back then.

Crosby, Stills & Nash - Cathedral
Crosby, Stills & Nash - Carry On/Questions

I also find it awesome that Emerson, Lake & Palmer make a record where they perform their interpretation of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, what a ballin show.

Passion Pit

So in my quest to find a band to play at SigEp in the fall, I stumbled upon these guys. One of my '11 friends knows the dude who runs Good Weather For Airstrikes (the blog, I guess it's kinda well known?). That guy apparently jizzes over these guys on a daily basis and is signing them as the first band on his newly formed record label. Perhaps more background than you needed. But here it is, "Sleepy Head," by Passion Pit. It's like Animal Collective meets Dan Deacon meets pure fucking awesome.

Aesop Rock

So Chris and I were planning on going to see Aesop Rock Friday night at the Roxy in Boston, but we arrived to the unfortunate news that he was unable to get out of New York and the show was postponed until Monday. Kurt Russell has been contacted to locate and rescue Mr. Rock from some thugs in New York which has become a penal colony. PS. I really heart None Shall Pass. Like a lot.

Here are some goodies.

Heart of an Olympic Champion

Unless Ultimate Frisbee, Thrift Store Shopping, or Indie Elitism become Olympic sports, it's unlikely that any of the TSRE heads will find themselves in the worldwide games. That being said, it's hard not to get psyched about Beige-ing 2k8. The Olympics are politically relevant again, Russia is invading Rem Shady's hometown, and Leon Phelps is winning medals left and right! How exciting!

The Dream Team is winning again, Amurrica has established swimming dominance, and Jon Simpson's orthodontist's daughter held on for a gynastics Silver medal (behind a 14 year old Chinese girl). Rock on, United States of the Americas.

So, as Le Truth and I have been watching night after night with Dedicated Fan X, I've been getting pretty psyched about some Olympic music. I'll keep the list short - just two tracks tonight. One is an awesome remix of the Olympic Theme by DJ Soap. The other, in honor of Charlie Stoebe making decisions for NBC, is Nelly's "Heart of a Champion" to the beat of Roundball Rock a.k.a. NBA on NBC a.k.a. that song that goes dun nu nu nu nu NA na naaaaa ni ni ni ni na nu na nu nu na na na NA NA. Baller.

Enjoy. Go Amurrica.

A to Z Challenge, Chapter A.

So I'm commuting around 7-8 hours a week, plus sometimes more than 10 on the weekends. It's a total suckfest, especially surrounded by asshole massachusetts drivers. But that's another story for another time.

The important takeaway is that I've found a lot of extra time to listen to music. Lots of music. So much time for so much music that I have been having trouble deciding what to listen to.

Hence, the A-Z challenge.

My iPod has 40 days of music on it. At the rate of 8 hours a week, that's over a years worth of commuting. Will I make it? No. Almost assuredly not. But "We are nothing if we do not try", or something else that sounds like a quote from some old revolutionary.

After around 3 weeks of listening, I've gotten through the letter A. 555 songs. Brilliant and Brutal. Here's the shakedown, and some tracks for your earz.

Most songs: Animal Collective (59)
Worst songs: Andrew W.K.? I dunno...I like some of his stuff, but I was definitely not in the right mood for songs like "Party Hard" and "It's Time To Party". Also, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead sucks. Not impressed.
Reaffirmed Love For: Andrew Bird, Animal Collective, Architecture in Helsinki, Aretha Franklin
Long Overdue Love: Afro Cuban All Stars, Atmosphere,
Top New Cut: Atmosphere - "Domestic Dog"
Weirdest juxtapöz: Afro Cuban All Stars --> Afroman --> Ah Ha. Weird.
Go Listen To:

Atmosphere - Domestic Dog

AmpLive (f. Codany Holiday) - 15 Stepz

Animal Collective - Grass

Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me

If it Ain't Broke..

So the new apartment is great. Real spacious and we actually managed to make it resemble an actual home. I'm shocked that I've been able to leave behind so many terrible habits from school. We actually wash plates once we're done with them and store good food in the fridge. Who would've thought it possible? Well this band is called the Hospital Ships and I know absolutely nothing about them. But the idea of a hospital ship reminds me of Great Expectations and the prison hulk from which Magwitch escapes. Listen for yourselves, its happy music.

Hospital Ships - Bitter Radio Single

Also, tomorrow's my first day of work. Can't wait to start dominating interns.

Bonus, lucky
